What can you find from a license plate?
The vehicle, in detail. The person, not at all. Here is where the line is and why.
The short answer
A license plate lookup tells you about the vehicle: what it is, when it was built and its VIN. It does not tell you who owns it, where they live or how to contact them.
What you can see
| Detail | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| VIN | The 17-character identity of the vehicle, for life |
| Year, make, model | Decoded from the VIN, e.g. 2019 Toyota Camry |
| Trim | The version, e.g. SE or XLE, which changes parts and value |
| Body and engine | Sedan, SUV or truck; engine size and cylinders |
Once you have the VIN, more opens up: open safety recalls on NHTSA’s site, theft and salvage checks with NICB’s VINCheck, and paid history reports that cover title brands, accidents and past auctions.
What you cannot see
- The registered owner’s name
- Their home address, phone number or email
- Their driver’s license number, Social Security number or photo
All of that sits in state DMV records and is protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act of 1994. It can be released for permitted purposes, like an insurance claim, a court case or a vehicle recall, but not to satisfy curiosity. Read more in can you find a car’s owner by plate.
Watch out for owner bait
Search for a plate and you will find sites promising the owner’s name for a few dollars. What they deliver is usually the same vehicle details shown here, plus guesses scraped from public records that may be about someone else entirely. We would rather say no up front.
FAQ
Plate lookup questions
- What information can you get from a license plate?
- The vehicle: its VIN, year, make, model, trim, body style and engine. With the VIN you can then check recalls, title brands and auction records.
- Can a license plate lookup show the owner’s name?
- Not for the public. Owner details are protected by the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for specific purposes, like insurance claims or court cases.
- Are free license plate lookups real?
- Many “free” lookups show the year, make and model and then charge for a report. Any site that promises the owner’s name and address for a small fee is not delivering what DMV records actually hold.
- Can police see more than I can?
- Yes. Law enforcement has access to full registration records, including the registered owner, as a permitted use under federal law.
