Look up a Ohio plate

Get the VIN, year, make, model and trim. Vehicle information only.

Vehicle information only. We do not provide owner information. Not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

In Ohio it is the BMV, not the DMV, and plates are issued at deputy registrar agencies across the state. The standard serial is three letters and four numbers. Ohio dropped its front plate requirement in 2020, so an Ohio car with only a rear plate is legal.

Ohio plate to VIN

A Ohio platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

Ohio license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

FormatWhat it is
ABC 1234Three letters and four numbers on the standard passenger plate.

Ohio issues one plate, for the rear of the vehicle.

Who issues plates in Ohio

Plates and registrations in Ohio come from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to deputy registrar agencies. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the BMV or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in Ohio

Ohio dealers issue temporary tags, displayed in the rear window, until the permanent plates are issued.

Personalized and specialty plates

The BMV offers personalized plates and a long list of specialty and organizational plates, which can be ordered online or at a deputy registrar.

Rear plate only since 2020

Ohio stopped requiring front plates on passenger vehicles on July 1, 2020. Older cars may still carry one, but it is optional.

What a Ohio plate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
