Tag vs. license plate

Same thing, different word. Here is where people say it and what it means.

A tag is a license plate

In most of the country people say “license plate” or just “plate”. In much of the South, “tag” is the everyday word, and in some states it is the official one: you renew your tag, and you get it at the tag office.

Where it is the official word

When “tag” means the sticker

In some places “tags” means the registration sticker on the plate, as in “my tags are expired”. The plate number and the sticker are tied to the same registration, so either way a tag lookup starts from the plate number.

Running a tag

“Running a tag” is what police call checking a plate against registration records. Members of the public can run a tag for the vehicle, which gives the VIN, year, make and model, but not for the owner. That is protected by federal law; see can you find a car’s owner by plate.

FAQ

Tag questions

Is a tag the same as a license plate?
Usually, yes. In much of the South, “tag” means the license plate, and the tag number is the plate number. In some states “tag” can also mean the registration sticker on the plate.
What does “run a tag” mean?
Look up a plate in vehicle records. Police use it for checking a registration and its owner. For the public, running a tag returns vehicle details, not the owner.
Which states say “tag”?
Georgia and Florida use it officially, with county tag offices, and it is common across Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas, Maryland and the Carolinas.
What is a temporary tag?
A short-term plate, often paper, issued by a dealer or the state until permanent plates are ready. Most states give it a number of its own.

Have a tag number?

Plate and state in, VIN and vehicle details out. No owner data, no email gate.
