Oklahoma License Plate & Tag Lookup
Enter an Oklahoma tag number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
Oklahoma is a tag state: Service Oklahoma runs a program called Ready, Set, Tag!, dealers hand out 10-day temporary tags, and licensed operators across the state handle plate work. A plate is assigned to you, not the car, and only one plate goes on the rear.
Oklahoma tag to VIN
An Oklahoma tagnumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the tag above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
Oklahoma license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| ABC-123 | Three letters and three numbers, used on the standard plate introduced September 1, 2024. |
| 123-ABC | Three numbers and three letters, used on plates issued from 2009 to 2016. |
Oklahoma issues one plate, for the rear of the vehicle.
Who issues plates in Oklahoma
Plates and registrations in Oklahoma come from the Service Oklahoma, and people go in person to Service Oklahoma locations and licensed operators, the local offices long known as tag agencies. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the SOK or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in Oklahoma
Dealers give buyers a paper temporary tag, but for vehicles bought since September 1, 2024, the metal plate with pre-registration decals must be on the car within 10 days of the sale.
Personalized and specialty plates
Personalized plates can have up to seven letters and numbers. You can check whether a combination is available through Service Oklahoma’s SOK Online portal.
Ready, Set, Tag!
Since September 1, 2024, a vehicle bought in Oklahoma must be pre-registered within two business days of the sale, and the metal plate must be on it within 10 days. Buyers still have two months to complete full registration.
What an Oklahomaplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.

Oklahoma plate lookup questions
- Does Oklahoma require a front license plate?
- No. Passenger vehicles in Oklahoma need one plate, on the rear.
- What does an Oklahoma plate number look like?
- Three letters and three numbers, like ABC-123.
- How long is an Oklahoma temporary tag good for?
- For vehicles bought since September 1, 2024, ten days from the date of sale. By then the metal plate with pre-registration decals must be on the car.
- What do I do with my Oklahoma tag when I sell my car?
- Keep it. Since July 1, 2019, Oklahoma plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle, and cannot be passed to the buyer. You can move the plate to another vehicle you own.
- Can I get a VIN from an Oklahoma tag?
- Yes. Enter the tag number with Oklahoma selected and the lookup returns the VIN of the vehicle it is registered to, with the year, make, model and trim.
- Can I find the owner of an Oklahoma tag?
- Not through a public lookup. Owner details in Oklahoma vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for purposes the law allows, such as by court order or to an insurer handling a claim.
