California License Plate Lookup
Enter a California plate number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
California has more registered vehicles than any other state, and its standard plate format has stayed the same for decades: one number, three letters, three numbers. That makes a California plate easy to recognize and easy to mistype, because the letters O and I look like the numbers 0 and 1 on a white plate.
California plate to VIN
A California platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
California license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| 1ABC234 | Standard passenger plate: one number, three letters, three numbers. The series runs in order, so a higher first number means a newer plate. |
California requires plates on the front and the rear.
Who issues plates in California
Plates and registrations in California come from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to DMV field offices, and AAA branches for members. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DMV or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in California
Since 2019 California dealers have had to put a temporary paper plate with its own number on every car they sell, in place of the old dealer advertising plate. The temporary plate is tied to the vehicle until the metal plates arrive in the mail, so it can be looked up like any other plate.
Personalized and specialty plates
California calls them personalized plates. They can have up to seven characters, and the DMV website lets you check whether a combination is available before you order. Special interest plates, such as the 1960s black legacy plate, can be personalized too.
Front plates are required
California requires a plate on the front and the back of most passenger vehicles. A car with only a rear plate is either from out of state or breaking the rule.
What a California plate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.

California plate lookup questions
- What does a California license plate number look like?
- A standard California passenger plate has seven characters: one number, three letters and three numbers, like 1ABC234. Personalized plates can be any combination of up to seven characters.
- Can I look up a California license plate for free?
- The California DMV does not offer a public plate lookup. Owner records are only released through a formal request for a purpose the law allows. A plate-to-VIN service like this one returns vehicle details, not owner details.
- Does California require a front license plate?
- Yes. Most passenger vehicles registered in California must display a plate on the front and the rear.
- How do I check if a personalized plate is available in California?

- Can I find the owner of a California license plate?
- Not through a public lookup. Owner details in California vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for purposes the law allows, such as by court order or to an insurer handling a claim.
