Oregon License Plate Lookup
Enter an Oregon plate number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
Oregon DMV is a division of the state Department of Transportation, and many services run through its DMV2U website. Most vehicles get two plates, with three numbers followed by three letters, while motorcycles, trailers and antique vehicles get one.
Oregon plate to VIN
An Oregon platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
Oregon license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| 123 ABC | Three numbers and three letters, the standard format since 2004. |
| ABC 123 | Three letters and three numbers, issued from 1989 to 2004. |
Oregon requires plates on the front and the rear.
Who issues plates in Oregon
Plates and registrations in Oregon come from the Oregon Department of Transportation Driver and Motor Vehicle Services, and people go in person to DMV offices. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the Oregon DMV or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in Oregon
Oregon dealers issue temporary registration permits valid for up to 90 consecutive days, or until the plates and any stickers arrive and are put on the car, whichever comes first. A dealer cannot extend a permit or issue a second one.
Personalized and specialty plates
Oregon calls them custom plates. They can have up to six characters plus one extra space or hyphen, and you can check availability and apply online through DMV2U.
Four years for a new car
A new vehicle registered in Oregon with new plates gets a four-year registration period. Most other passenger vehicles renew every two years.
What an Oregonplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
