Idaho plates start with a county code, such as 1A for Ada County or K for Kootenai County, from a system in use since 1945. Registration runs through the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Motor Vehicles, but people handle it at county DMV offices. Since July 1, 2026, Idaho no longer issues registration stickers, and plates are no longer replaced every ten years.

Idaho plate to VIN

An Idaho platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

Idaho license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

FormatWhat it is
2T 1234UA county code comes first, here 2T for Twin Falls County, then a serial that usually ends in U, on the red, white and blue Scenic Idaho plate. A white-and-black standard design has also been offered since July 1, 2026.

Idaho issues two plates. Cars with a front plate bracket must display both, but since July 1, 2025, cars built without a front bracket need only the rear plate.

Who issues plates in Idaho

Plates and registrations in Idaho come from the Idaho Transportation Department Division of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to county DMV offices, run by county assessors and sheriffs. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the Idaho DMV or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in Idaho

Idaho dealers can issue temporary registration permits, valid for up to 30 days.

Personalized and specialty plates

Personalized plates allow up to seven characters on a standard passenger plate, counting spaces. DMV Online has a free tool to check if a combination is available.

No bracket, no front plate

Since July 1, 2025, cars built without a front plate bracket don’t need a front plate in Idaho. The state still issues two plates, and cars with a front bracket must display both.

What an Idahoplate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.

FAQ

Idaho plate lookup questions

Does Idaho require a front license plate?
Yes, if the car has a front plate bracket. Since July 1, 2025, vehicles without a front bracket only need the rear plate.
What does an Idaho plate number look like?
A county code followed by numbers and letters, like 2T 1234U. The code shows the county where the car is registered.
Does Idaho still use registration stickers?
No. Idaho stopped issuing registration stickers on July 1, 2026. You still have to renew your registration on time.
What do I do with my Idaho plates when I sell my car?
Keep them. Plates stay with the seller, who can transfer them to another vehicle and get credit for time left on the registration.
Can I get a VIN from an Idaho license plate?
Yes. Enter the license plate number with Idaho selected and the lookup returns the VIN of the vehicle it is registered to, with the year, make, model and trim.
Can I find the owner of an Idaho license plate?
Not through a public lookup. Owner details in Idaho vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for purposes the law allows, such as by court order or to an insurer handling a claim.
