Georgia License Plate & Tag Lookup
Enter a Georgia tag number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
Georgia is a tag state in every sense. Plates are issued at the county tag office, renewals are called tag renewals, and the Department of Revenue, not a DMV, runs the system. If someone in Atlanta asks for your tag number, they mean your plate.
Georgia tag to VIN
A Georgia tagnumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the tag above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
Georgia license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| ABC1234 | Standard plate since 2012: three letters and four numbers. |
| ABC1DE | The 250 Years design introduced in 2026 uses shorter mixed serials like this one. |
Georgia issues one plate, for the rear of the vehicle.
Who issues plates in Georgia
Plates and registrations in Georgia come from the Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division, and people go in person to county tag offices, run by each county’s tax commissioner. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DOR Motor Vehicle Division or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in Georgia
Georgia dealers print a temporary operating permit through the state’s registration system. It covers the car while the title and permanent tag are processed, and it carries its own number.
Personalized and specialty plates
Georgia sells prestige (personalized) plates and a long list of specialty plates through the county tag offices. Availability can be checked online through the Department of Revenue.
Your tag goes with you when you sell
A Georgia plate belongs to the owner, who removes it at sale and can transfer it to their next car. The buyer gets a temporary permit and a new tag of their own.
What a Georgia plate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
