Look up a Pennsylvania plate

Get the VIN, year, make, model and trim. Vehicle information only.

Vehicle information only. We do not provide owner information. Not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

Pennsylvania plates are issued by PennDOT, and the standard serial is three letters and four numbers on a single rear plate. In 2026 PennDOT added new designs for the nation’s 250th anniversary, so more than one standard look is on the road.

Pennsylvania plate to VIN

A Pennsylvania platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

Pennsylvania license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

FormatWhat it is
ABC-1234Three letters and four numbers on the standard passenger plate.

Who issues plates in Pennsylvania

Plates and registrations in Pennsylvania come from the PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services, and people go in person to PennDOT driver and vehicle centers and authorized online messengers and tag agents. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the PennDOT or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania dealers and authorized agents can issue temporary registration plates while the permanent registration is processed.

Personalized and specialty plates

PennDOT offers personalized plates and a range of special fund and organization plates, which can be ordered online.

The plate belongs to the seller

In Pennsylvania the plate stays with the person, not the car. A seller removes it at the sale and can move it to their next vehicle, so a plate can have been on more than one car over the years.

What a Pennsylvania plate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
