Look up a Nevada plate

Get the VIN, year, make, model and trim. Vehicle information only.

Vehicle information only. We do not provide owner information. Not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

The standard Nevada plate is the Home Means Nevada design, with a mountain range across the bottom, and most cars need it on the front and the back. Nevada plates are issued to people and businesses, not to vehicles, so they go with the owner when a car is sold.

Nevada plate to VIN

A Nevada platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

Nevada license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

FormatWhat it is
123 4A5Six characters with a small Nevada-shaped separator after the first three, on the Home Means Nevada plate. Some plates in this series use the 12A 345 pattern instead.
123 A45The Home Means Nevada pattern issued from November 2016 until early 2024, still common on the road.

Nevada requires plates on the front and the rear, unless the vehicle was not designed for a front plate and came without a way to mount one.

Who issues plates in Nevada

Plates and registrations in Nevada come from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to DMV offices. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DMV or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in Nevada

Only a Nevada-licensed dealer selling to a Nevada resident can legally issue a temporary placard. Each vehicle gets one placard, good for 30 days, before full registration is required.

Personalized and specialty plates

Personalized plates can have up to seven characters on most plate backgrounds. The DMV has an online plate search to check availability, and custom plates take 10 to 12 weeks to make.

No bracket, no front plate

A front plate is not required if the vehicle was not designed for one and the manufacturer did not provide a way to mount it. In that case, keep the second plate and return both to the DMV when the time comes.

What a Nevadaplate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.

FAQ

Nevada plate lookup questions

Does Nevada require a front license plate?
Yes, for most vehicles. The exception is a vehicle that was not designed for a front plate and came without a factory mounting bracket. Motorcycles and trailers need only a rear plate.
What does a Nevada plate number look like?
Six characters split by a small state-shaped separator, like 123 4A5 or 12A 345. Plates issued from 2016 to early 2024 look like 123 A45.
How long is a Nevada temporary placard good for?
Thirty days. A dealer can issue only one per vehicle sold. Placards sold online are fake and do not count as registration.
Do Nevada plates stay with the car when it’s sold?
No. Nevada plates are issued to people and businesses, not vehicles. You can transfer your plates to your next vehicle.
Can I get a VIN from a Nevada license plate?
Yes. Enter the license plate number with Nevada selected and the lookup returns the VIN of the vehicle it is registered to, with the year, make, model and trim.
Can I find the owner of a Nevada license plate?
Not through a public lookup. Owner details in Nevada vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for purposes the law allows, such as by court order or to an insurer handling a claim.
