Vehicle information only. We do not provide owner information. Not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

Missouri plates have an unusual pattern, two letters, a number, then letter, number, letter, and the first letter tells you the month the registration expires. Plates come from license offices run by contractors for the Department of Revenue, not from a DMV.

Missouri plate to VIN

A Missouri platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

Missouri license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

Who issues plates in Missouri

Plates and registrations in Missouri come from the Missouri Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Bureau, and people go in person to license offices, about 170 of them, run by contractors under the Department of Revenue. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the Department of Revenue or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in Missouri

When a buyer has no plate to transfer, Missouri dealers sell a temporary permit valid for 30 days from purchase, displayed on the rear. Some dealers can issue a 60-day permit.

Personalized and specialty plates

Personalized plates take up to six characters plus one space, dash or apostrophe. The Department of Revenue’s Personalize & Reserve tool shows whether a combination is free.

30 days to title, or pay a penalty

A Missouri buyer has 30 days to title the car and pay sales tax at a license office. After that a $25 penalty applies, rising by $25 every 30 days to a maximum of $200.

What a Missouri plate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
