District of Columbia License Plate & Tag Lookup
Enter a District of Columbia tag number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
In DC, plates are tags, even in the DMV’s own service names: tag transfer, tag surrender, personalized tags. Standard tags are two letters and four numbers, and cars must display one on the front and one on the rear.
District of Columbia tag to VIN
A District of Columbia tagnumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the tag above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
District of Columbia license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| AB 1234 | Two letters and four numbers. |
District of Columbia requires plates on the front and the rear.
Who issues plates in District of Columbia
Plates and registrations in District of Columbia come from the District of Columbia Department of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to DC DMV service centers. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DC DMV or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in District of Columbia
DC dealers issue temporary tags, and the DC DMV issues its own 45-day temporary tags, printed on weather-resistant paper since September 2024, for residents whose car still needs inspection.
Personalized and specialty plates
Personalized tags can have up to seven characters on a car, using letters, the numbers 1 to 9 and spaces. You can check availability online, and there is a $100 reservation fee.
Don’t cancel insurance first
When you sell a DC car and don’t move the tags to another vehicle, surrender them and wait for the receipt before canceling insurance. Canceling first can trigger an insurance lapse fee.
What a District of Columbiaplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
