New Hampshire License Plate Lookup
Enter a New Hampshire plate number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
New Hampshire plates are all numbers, seven of them on current standard plates, and passenger plates carry the state motto Live Free or Die. Registration starts with the clerk in the town or city where you live, and most clerks also act as municipal agents that handle the state part for the DMV.
New Hampshire plate to VIN
A New Hampshire platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
New Hampshire license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| 123 4567 | Seven numbers, on the green Old Man of the Mountain plate used since 1999. |
| 123 456 | An earlier six-number series on the same design. |
New Hampshire requires plates on the front and the rear.
Who issues plates in New Hampshire
Plates and registrations in New Hampshire come from the New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to town and city clerk offices, where every registration starts, and DMV offices. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DMV or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in New Hampshire
Dealers issue 20-day temporary plates. Buyers in a private sale can get a 20-day plate from the DMV.
Personalized and specialty plates
Vanity plates for passenger cars can have up to seven characters: letters, the numbers 1 to 9, and the symbols &, - and +. The state’s online Plate Check tool shows whether a combination is available.
No zeros on vanity plates
New Hampshire automatically turns every zero in a vanity request into the letter O. If you see what looks like a 0 on a New Hampshire vanity plate, it is an O.
What a New Hampshireplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
