North Dakota License Plate Lookup
Enter a North Dakota plate number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
North Dakota plates put the numbers first: three numbers, then three letters, on a Badlands scene. Plates go with the owner, not the car, so the seller takes them off at the sale. Since August 2025 you can also pay extra for a solid black blackout plate.
North Dakota plate to VIN
A North Dakota platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
North Dakota license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| 123 ABC | Three numbers and three letters on the Badlands design introduced in November 2016. |
North Dakota requires plates on the front and the rear.
Who issues plates in North Dakota
Plates and registrations in North Dakota come from the North Dakota Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division, and people go in person to NDDOT’s Bismarck office and Motor Vehicle branch offices across the state, many of them in county courthouses. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the NDDOT or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in North Dakota
Dealer buyers drive on a temporary registration permit shown in the rear window or where the rear plate goes, and state law treats a dealer’s registration certificate as valid for 75 days from the application. Private buyers can get a 75-day temporary permit online or at an NDDOT kiosk.
Personalized and specialty plates
Personalized plates can have up to seven characters, counting spaces, and cost $25 a year on top of registration. NDDOT has an online search to see if a combination has already been requested.
Five days without plates
Because the seller keeps the plates, a buyer may drive a newly bought vehicle for up to five days with no plates, as long as they carry a dated bill of sale or title. After that they need a temporary permit or registration.
What a North Dakotaplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
