Look up a South Dakota plate

Get the VIN, year, make, model and trim. Vehicle information only.

Vehicle information only. We do not provide owner information. Not affiliated with any DMV or government agency.

South Dakota plates start with a county number, so you can usually tell where a car is registered at a glance. Plates are handled by county treasurer offices for the Department of Revenue, and they belong to the owner, not the car.

South Dakota plate to VIN

A South Dakota platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.

South Dakota license plate formats

Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.

FormatWhat it is
1AB 234A county number, then letters and numbers. The number shows the county, so 1 is Minnehaha and 2 is Pennington, and the current Mount Rushmore design dates from 2023.
44A 123Counties numbered 10 and up have a letter right after the county number.

South Dakota requires plates on the front and the rear.

Who issues plates in South Dakota

Plates and registrations in South Dakota come from the South Dakota Department of Revenue, and people go in person to county treasurer offices. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DOR or any other government agency.

Temporary tags in South Dakota

South Dakota dealers can issue a temporary permit that is good for 45 days after the sale, or until the buyer gets regular plates from the county treasurer, whichever comes first.

Personalized and specialty plates

Personalized plates on cars, trucks and motorhomes can have up to seven characters, counting spaces, and you can check online whether a combination is taken. A single 1 or 2 is not allowed.

County numbers date to 1956

The nine largest counties got numbers 1 to 9 by population in 1956, and the rest were numbered alphabetically from 10. That is why fast-growing Lincoln County is still 44.

What a South Dakotaplate lookup can and can’t show

You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.

What we don’t show, and why

No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.

FAQ

South Dakota plate lookup questions

Does South Dakota require a front license plate?
Yes. State law requires one plate on the front and one on the rear.
What does a South Dakota plate number look like?
A county number followed by letters and numbers, like 1AB 234 for Minnehaha County or 44A 123 for Lincoln County.
How long is a South Dakota dealer temporary permit good for?
Forty-five days after the sale, or until you get your regular plates, whichever comes first.
Do South Dakota plates stay with the car when I sell it?
No. Plates stay with the owner. Take them off when you sell, and you can move them to your next vehicle for credit on the remaining registration.
Can I get a VIN from a South Dakota license plate?
Yes. Enter the license plate number with South Dakota selected and the lookup returns the VIN of the vehicle it is registered to, with the year, make, model and trim.
Can I find the owner of a South Dakota license plate?
Not through a public lookup. Owner details in South Dakota vehicle records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act and released only for purposes the law allows, such as by court order or to an insurer handling a claim.
