Nebraska License Plate Lookup
Enter a Nebraska plate number to get the vehicle’s VIN, year, make, model and trim.
Nebraska plates show where a car is registered: in 90 of the state’s 93 counties, the plate number starts with a county number, while Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy counties get plain letter-and-number plates. The current design, issued for 2023 to 2029, shows the Genius of Creative Energy mosaic from the State Capitol in blue. Registration is handled by county treasurers, under the Nebraska DMV.
Nebraska plate to VIN
A Nebraska platenumber points to one current registration, and the registration records the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter the plate above to get the VIN with the year, make, model, trim, body and engine. It is the quickest way to get the VIN of a car you are not standing next to: one in a listing, one you are quoting a repair for, or your own when the title is in a drawer somewhere.
Nebraska license plate formats
Standard passenger plates use these formats. Personalized, specialty, commercial and motorcycle plates follow their own rules, and every format works in the lookup.
| Format | What it is |
|---|---|
| ABC 123 | Three letters and three numbers, issued in Douglas, Lancaster and Sarpy counties on the blue-on-white 2023–2029 plate. |
| 3-A1234 | In the other 90 counties, the plate starts with a county number, followed by letters and numbers. |
Nebraska currently requires plates on the front and the rear. Cars built without a front bracket can use a windshield decal instead, and a 2025 law moves the state to a single rear plate by the 2029 plate cycle.
Who issues plates in Nebraska
Plates and registrations in Nebraska come from the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, and people go in person to county treasurer offices. Plate Decoder is an independent service and is not affiliated with the DMV or any other government agency.
Temporary tags in Nebraska
Nebraska dealers issue In Transit stickers, which let a buyer drive a newly bought vehicle for 30 days while it is registered.
Personalized and specialty plates
Nebraska calls them message plates. They allow up to seven characters on cars, and the DMV website has a tool to check if a message is available.
A decal instead of a front plate
Since 2017, owners of passenger cars built without a front plate bracket can buy a decal for the driver side of the windshield instead of mounting a front plate.
What a Nebraskaplate lookup can and can’t show
You get the vehicle: VIN, year, make, model, trim, body and engine. You do not get the person. See what a plate lookup shows for the full list.
What we don’t show, and why
No owner names, addresses, phone numbers or photos. Owner details in DMV records are protected by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and looking someone up out of curiosity is not a purpose it allows. Any site that promises the owner of a plate for a few dollars is either breaking that law or not going to deliver.
